UN: Sexual minorities reach the UN
المصدر:The Human Rights Tribune
During the last UN Commission on Human Rights in April 2002, two human rights independent experts, Asma Jahangir and Radhika Coomaraswamy, made a historic appearance at an NGO briefing.
These experts affirmed the importance of defending the rights of sexual minorities as part of the UN human rights work. The Human Rights Tribune reports that three days later, the Human Rights Commission heard Indian activist Aditya Bondyopadhyay denounce the treatment of sexual minorities in India, only the third direct testimony of abuses based on sexual orientation in the history of this UN body. These events are the latest in a series of recent steps taken to bring human rights violations based on sexual orientation and gender identity into the UN human rights agenda.
