Women's Empowerment in Muslim Contexts
The Research Programme Consortium on 'Women's empowerment in Muslim contexts: gender, poverty
and democratisation from the inside out' (WEMC) was formed to address this knowledge gap - that is,
'how to achieve women's empowerment', especially in the face of disempowering forces, old and new.
WEMC defines women's empowerment as an increase in their capacity to make autonomous decisions to
challenge or transform power relations that impede gender equality. It contends that conventional
