The arrival of women on Kuwait's political stage is matched in significance by the quiet rise of Islamists, says Raymond Barrett.
Although no female candidate standing in Kuwait's elections on Thursday won a seat, one maintained it was only `a matter of time' before a woman was elected.
First came a letter carrying a stern warning: "Quit the race, or else." Next, unidentified attackers cut up and sprayed insults over campaign billboards.
The Al-Ifta and Islamic Research Sector at the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs has issued a fatwa stating “no one can force any citizen, either male or female, to vote for any specific candidate.”
