Women Reclaiming and Redefining Cultures (WRRC)

WLUML and the Institute for Women’s Empowerment (IWE) collaborated on the joint programme “Women Reclaiming and Re-defining Cultures: Asserting rights over body, self and public spaces,” as part of the activities of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.

The aim of the programme was to enable women to repossess and reconstruct cultural resources (including ‘religion’ and ‘tradition’) in order to claim rights, empowering them vis-à-vis those who use disempowering cultural/religious discourses to dis-empower women and deny their human rights and equal citizenship. WELDD

WLUML’s Women’s Empowerment and Leadership Development for Democratisation (WELDD) programme aimed to support young feminist activism through capacity building on transformative feminist leadership, to better equip them in their activism for socio-political change in Muslim contexts. WLUML held a series of multi-country workshops for young feminists in the Middle East and West Africa towards this goal. Read more…

Feminist Leadership Transnational Institutes

Beginning in 1998, WLUML has organized a series of six Feminist Leadership Institutes. These Feminism in the Muslim World Leadership Institutes – held in a number of countries, including Turkey and Nigeria – were developed as an international program to bring together groups of young women leaders from various Muslim countries and communities: to enhance the effectivenes of the participants’ local organizing, to contribute to building the capacity of the transnational solidarity network, and to break isolation and reinforce solidarity.
