A second purpose of this manual is to make helpers aware of the so-called ‘burnout syndrome’ that comes with the stress of difficult and depressing work. It offers suggestions how to avoid having a burnout.

Finally, the manual suggests ways in which relief workers can mobilize the community to participate in their own personal recovery and in the recovery of their communities. Especially young volunteers can make a difference through their involvement in the work since youth is often very motivated to undertake activities with the community.
